Candidate Statements


President
David Wexler (A Hunter United)

David is a Political Science Major, who has participated in student government for 8 years. As Cultural Affairs Commissioner, David did his best to create a greater sense of community amongst Hunter's diverse clubs and organized events that all clubs could participate in, such as the Club Fairs. He understands the concerns of students, and will work tirelessly to make sure that your college experience is as enjoyable as possible. David will fight for your needs, and welcomes you to come to the office to propose an idea, voice a concern or just to talk. The door is always open.

 


Vice President
Jessica Zannikos (A Hunter United)

Jessica is a sophomore at Hunter College and currently serves in USG as the External Affairs Commissioner. Her big project this year was to keep people informed and actively tried to fight the tuition hikes and budget cuts. Jessica is also responsible for writing the bi-weekly G-Blasts. As Vice President she hopes to make the campus greener, make sure food prices in the cafeteria stay affordable, and address overall issues students have. Her hope is to make Hunter more inclusive and fun for students. Most importantly Jessica hopes to keep the channels of communication open between the students and USG.

 


Finance Commissioner
Christian Ramsay (A Hunter United)

Christian Ramsay is currently a sophomore, pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies. He is currently a member of the College Association and Treasurer of the Brookdale dormitories. He believes in the efficient and effective use and management of Hunter student activity fee supported activities. Using his position in Student Government, Christian looks forward to bringing more attention to the concerns of the Hunter community to USG, through increased interaction between the student body and the Student Government. He intends to bring more entertaining events to help make Hunter a tighter-knit, enjoyable community.

 


External Affairs/Public Relations Commissioner
Tyler Alterman (A Hunter United)

Tired of trudging through obscure forms and websites, Tyler Alterman plans to implement Hunter-wide communications programs where students can easily find out about financial aid, student activities, and clubs online. He'll also fight to make USG the true voice of the students by getting as much as your input as possible through focus groups, interest surveys, and plain old conversation. Right now, Tyler is working on getting the USG website up while also developing the online communications plan. Favorite activities include design, creative writing, and epic adventures. Student Welfare/Academic Affairs Commissioner
Vanessa Lorenzo (A Hunter United)

Lorenzo is a junior majoring in Media Studies and English Literature in order to pursue a career in public policy or advocacy. He is involved in several student organizations on campus but as president of Lesbians Rising, he has organized and led workshops, discussions and events. Using the skills that he has developed, he will spread awareness of financial aid information and opportunities that Hunter offers so that students can make the best of their college experience. If elected, Lorenzo will make sure that students have a voice on campus and will bring about change to meet the students' needs.

 


Brookdale Commissioner
Naseeba Ramjan (A Hunter United)

Naseeba Ramjan, a sophomore majoring in Psychology and Philosophy, is currently the Events Coordinator of the Hunter Dorms. She has worked to strengthen the community at Brookdale by organizing events such as Band Nights, Bowling Events, and the Ski and Six Flags trips over the past two years. If elected as Brookdale Commissioner, she will address ongoing problems involving sanitary concerns at the dorms and making the athletics/recreational facilities more available. She will also reach out to residents to find out what new things they would like to see happen in the Gameroom, Brookdale and more generally, at Hunter.

 


Cultural Affairs/Student Activities Commissioner
Venus Velez (A Hunter United)

Venus Velez is a second year student at Hunter College. She plans on majoring in Sociology. She is currently the President of the Eugenio Maria De Hostos Puerto Rican Club and an active member of the Latino Honor Society. Venus is very well aware of how diverse Hunter College is and plans to adhere to the wide-ranging needs within the Hunter College community through various celebrations and informational seminars. It's difficult to learn of the resources Hunter offers and so she plans to make them known to the student body.

 


Evening Affairs Commissioner
Elina Faynleyb (A Hunter United)

Elina Faynleyb is a Junior, majoring in Creative Writing. Elina has served in the student government for two years as a senator on the Evening Affairs Committee. She has helped with the planning and execution of numerous evening events at Hunter, including the Bi-weekly PBR parties, and the club parties outside of Hunter. As Evening Affairs Commissioner, Elina plans to do more tabling and information sessions for the evening students, as well as a variety of new events that will incorporate new themes and help bring out the diversity of Hunter.

Jared Greenfield (A Hunter United)

Jared is a sophomore double-majoring in political science and environmental policy. Advocacy and a commitment to social action are his priorities. Now running for reelection to the College Association, he hopes to continue to use his skills to work for the students and clubs of Hunter, and provide the students with a wide range of activities. He will serve the student body and make sure that the clubs and organizations are given the funding they need to make the Hunter experience enjoyable.

Edina Kacic (A Hunter United)

Edina Kacic, currently a sophomore, majoring in English with a possible double major in the QUEST Program. She started writing for The Envoy in the Fall 2008 semester. She mostly writes articles for the News section, which usually revolves around events at Hunter. Writing these articles, she met a lot of members from USG and she became very interested. She wants to be a part of USG because she loves to tell people what is going on at Hunter and she wants more people to get involved.

Min Jeong Kim (A Hunter United)

Min Jeong Kim is currently a sophomore at Hunter College. She is double majoring in Math and Music. She looks forwards to work in Hunter's student body. She had a lot of leadership experiences in the past and wants to serve in Hunter College. Min Jeong wants to provide varieties of activities for undergraduate students. She is very responsible and will work her best to develop Hunter Community.

Benjamin Mejia (A Hunter United)

Benjamin Mejia is currently a junior at Hunter College, majoring in Psychology and Human Rights Law. He has served on the Brookdale Council for the past two years, and has assisted the Council with various programs and initiatives aimed at making the dormitories a more pleasant living experience. He has also managed to be involved in several clubs at Hunter, despite working part-time and taking a full course-load like everyone else. As a College Association member, he hopes to bring the same positive attitude and work ethic to improving things uptown that he has brought the Brookdale Council.

Steriani Kourtis (A Hunter United)

As an AEB member, Steriani will seek to address student concerns at Hunter. She is aware that there are some issues plaguing Hunter and she will work to improve our school. As a member of the AEB, she will make sure that student voices are heard. She will make herself available to students so that they can address any issues they may have. These are your best years; make them count by getting what you want. You have a say in what goes on in YOUR school, and she is here to help you fulfill your Hunter needs.

Marieke Pennings (A Hunter United)

Marieke Pennings is entering into her junior year at Hunter College and is a double major in psychology and religion. She was a member of the Global Medical Brigades last year and this year she is the treasurer for the club. She believes that it is essential for Hunter students to be involved in improving welfare of each and every student. She is excited to be a part of the Auxiliary Enterprise Board because she will bring fresh ideas and a great atmosphere to the board.

David Weinberger (A Hunter United)

David is a Political Science major. In February 2009, he organized and led the Roosevelt Institution's trip to the Power Shift Conference in Washington, D.C., the largest student environmentalism conference in U.S. history. Through his work as leader of NYPIRG's higher education funding project, David has had extensive opportunities to discuss the unique needs of his peers at Hunter College. As a member of the Auxiliary Enterprise Board, he hopes to address these needs through effective student advocacy and representation.

Shamika Cardozo-Acuna (A Hunter United)

Shamika is a sophomore at Hunter College and is active member of different clubs on campus and wants to join USG in order to have a greater connection with students and the community. She would like to do this by being a member the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee.

Joshua Bloom (A Hunter United)

Josh is a junior majoring in Chemistry and adolescent education; as a future educator he assigns great importance to educational justice and students getting their fair share. He's involved with student life in the main campus, through the many clubs he is a member of. These connections have taught him both the amazing advantages and unfortunate downsides of being a Hunter student, and he intends to bring this perspective to head from within the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee.

David Ciriaco (A Hunter United)

David Ciriaco is a sophomore pursuing a major in Italian and minor in Education. David enjoys being involved in student organizations and is currently the vice-president of the Italian American Club, as well as a member of Student Activities. As a member of the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee, David will further strengthen the relations between faculty and students, improve relations with the Hunter Athletics Department, and organize social events for everyone. His main goal is to help build a more enjoyable community at Hunter College in which everyone can benefit from and feel safe, respected, and represented with dignity.

Eli Cohen (A Hunter United)

Eli Cohen is a sophomore currently running for the Student Government of Hunter College. Eli is aware of the large community and its large needs, and feels most comfortable when serving those around him. He is a Community Assistant at the Brookdale dorms and has solid experience in positions of leadership. Eli is also an instructor of yoga, applying calm and collected approaches to all needs. He understands the importance of unified and focused leadership, and is ready tackle the challenges and needs of the student government; most importantly, those of the student body.

Jim Brian Estil (A Hunter United)

Jim Brian "JB" Estil, a sophomore in the Honors College at Hunter, is running for a position on the USG Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee (FSCD). JB, a transfer student originally from Brooklyn College with aspirations for medical school, has yet to complete his first full year at Hunter College, yet he is already excited at the prospect of serving his new college community. JB is a newcomer to student government, but hia leadership skills, volunteer experiences, and determined work ethic make him a viable candidate. His hobbies include running, dragonboating, and occasionally a good read.

M.D. Khan (A Hunter United)

The Hunter College community is one of the most outstanding MD has come to know. As a sophomore and candidate for the Faculty-Student Disciplinary Committee, he hopes to render decisions that are fair to both parties of an allegation. He is presently a member of the Hunter College United Nations Student Association, and has done leadership and student governmental work all through his high school career. He plans to double major in political science and psychology, and someday hopes to work as a diplomat. With the support and determination of Hunter United, we can surely build a united Hunter College.

 


Freshmen Senators
Ranette Garcia (A Hunter United)

Ranette Garcia is a freshman senator serving on the Evening Affairs Committee. She is majoring in Sociology with a minor in Media. Ranette has committed her time to community service by participating in Hunter Has Heart. With the program, she headed down to New Orleans where she built houses for hurricane victims and spread the awareness of solidarity. On campus, she has helped plan club parties, PBR, club fairs and participated in other student socials affiliated with USG. Ranette will work hard to consider, recognize and adhere to the needs of the student body to the best of her ability.

 


Freshmen Senators
Victoria Melendez (A Hunter United)

Victoria Melendez is a freshman and member of the Community Scholars/Preceptor Program at Hunter. She was involved in student government for four years in High School and served as president of Model Congress. Victoria is passionate about music and social issues, often combining the two to organize benefit concerts. She wants to serve in USG and hopes to use the experience to encourage students to become more involved at Hunter and in the community. As a senator, Victoria hopes to organize events that will make students feel at home in this large community.

 


Sophomore Senators
Aleksandr "Sasha" Akulov (A Hunter United)

As Freshman Senator, member of the Cultural Affairs Committee, and student representative on the Blackboard Policy Advisory Committee, Sasha took action and represented the student body. His tasks included appropriating all funds for student activities, approving all USG budgets, participating in Club Forums, and aiding USG sponsored events. With the new transition from Blackboard 6.0 to Blackboard 8.0, he worked closely with the committee to improve the layout, functionality, and resolve the inaccessibility blackout of Blackboard 8.0.

 


Sophomore Senators
Tahira Pierre-Cadet (A Hunter United)

Tahira Pierre-Cadet is a Media major, and currently an Auxiliary Enterprise Board representative. She is familiar with the wants and needs of the Hunter Community, and is determined to do all that is possible to enhance the college experience. She is a firm believer in one's social responsibility to promote unity and love within their community, and plans to do so in her remaining years at Hunter College. She has an innate sense of good judgment and will do all that is in her ability to protect the welfare and dignity of the Hunter Student Body.

 


Sophomore Senators
Louis Mergler (A Hunter United)

Lou Mergler is currently an Anthropology major, looking to expand that into an Ethnomusicology major. He plays the saxophone and loves music from all around the world. Currently serving as a Senator and a member of the Cultural Affairs committee, Lou has had a lot of first hand contact with many of the issues concerning the Hunter student body. Lou plans to continue to serve the needs of the Hunter students, academically, socially, and in any way necessary.

 


Sophomore Senators
Mary Williams (A Hunter United)

Mary Williams is currently a freshman at Hunter College and is majoring in English and Human Rights. She enjoys writing, photography and eating chocolate. She wants to join USG in the hopes of increasing student and USG communication. The goal is to increase student access to Hunter's many clubs, awesome events and to strengthen the community. She will be working with the other members of USG to help improve Hunter, make the student body's voice heard and bring you the best trips, club events and guest speakers.

Cindy Cheng (A Hunter United)

Cindy Cheng is a sophomore at Hunter College. She is majoring in Psychology with an intended double major in Creative Writing and minor in Economics. Cindy is currently a member of the Hunter College Women's Swim Team. As a student, athlete and employee of Hunter College, Cindy has been exposed to numerous issues that require improvement. As senator, Cindy hopes to help bridge the gap in communication between students and the school administration as well as to increase student involvement in student government.

 


Junior Senators
Andrew Erb (A Hunter United)

Andrew is currently a junior at Hunter College, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in math. Though new to the student senate, he has a long-standing involvement with student organizations and the Hunter community at large, holding positions such as Treasurer of Asian Students in Action (A.S.I.A.) and President of Hunter Japanese Media Club. Additionally, he gives tours and acts as a student representative in the Student Ambassadors program. He intends to promote student-influenced events to showcase student involvement and creativity, increase the resources available to clubs, and explore courses of action in response to the recent CUNY tuition hikes.

Curtis Laraque (A Hunter United)

Curtis Laraque is a current Sophomore Senator and member of the Cultural Affairs Committee. As such, he made various efforts in fulfilling his goal to build a larger sense of community in Hunter College. Under his committee and through the involvement of Hunter's Student clubs and exciting speakers and performers, Curtis has helped bring about the success of many events, bringing Hunter students together in a community setting. Curtis intends to continue to further his goal in the future as a Junior Senator and, through more than just events, make Hunter a fun and exciting place.

Dahana Louis (A Hunter United)

Dahana is a junior pursuing a double major in Political Science and French Language and Civilization. She has interned with various non-profit organizations that work on human rights, gender equality and immigration issues such as Global Kids, Kids Meeting Kids and Latin American Integration Center (LAIC). In the past, she has contributed in opening the first Latin International High School in Long Island, New York. She is trying to revive Amnesty International at Hunter. She is dedicated in continuing the good work of Undergraduate Student Government as well as representing and voicing the concerns of the students at Hunter.

Candace Brereton (A Hunter United)

Candace Brereton has been involved with USG for one year and served as the Student Welfare Commissioner. This past year she was responsible for planning the first Annual Freshman Mixer, Thanksgiving Dinner, Spring Dinner and the upcoming Senior Brunch. Candace has served on the USG E-Board for the past year. Through the Senior Senator position, she plans to help the student body plan and achieve various goals events and programs.

Christopher Eng (A Hunter United)

Christopher Eng is double majoring in English Literature and Chinese, minoring in Asian American Studies. He is currently Junior Senator on the Cultural Affairs Committee. In addition to assisting in student government events, he coordinated the Speaker Series, organizing events including "Teaching Tolerance in NYC and Beyond" with Hillel and S.A.M.E. as well as the Alternative Career Night. He also served as a representative of the College Association. He is co-founder of advocacy group CRAASH, coordinating efforts to raise awareness of the importance of ethnic and gender studies. He hopes to continue to work for students' rights on campus.

Gregory Grobstin (A Hunter United)

Gregory Grobstin is an art history major and a studio art minor at Hunter. As a recent transfer from the New York Institute of Technology, he has already established and presides over AHAH! Art Historians at Hunter and is also actively involved with the Hillel Foundation. As a senator, Gregory aims to bring forward a plethora of free art programs and exhibitions.

Elina Melamed (A Hunter United)

Elina Melamed is currently a junior, double majoring in biochemistry and Hebrew. Having chosen to pursue her interest in medicine, Elina has volunteered at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and is currently working in a biophysical laboratory. Elina wants to make her final year at Hunter College a memorable one, and hopes to accomplish this by running for a USG Senator position. As a Senator, she is looking forward to making a difference in the Hunter community by helping ensure that students make the most of what the college has to offer them.
